"Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant." Those not familiar with Darren Shan's collection of novels, on which this film is partly based, might consider the pic a collection of pieces taken from past works focused on vampires, magic, freaky characters and of course, good vs. evil. It's a decent story that houses some nice originality, but finds its downfall in over-the-top performances and a handful of plot holes. The feature follows a young man named Darren (Chris Massoglia) who lives a pretty good life as a high school student. One night, Darren and his best friend Steve (Josh Hutcherson) sneak out to take in the Cirque Du Freak, a show in the dark corner of town. The visit immerses the two friends in an underworld battle that they never could have imagined, and ultimately pushes them further apart. Checking out Shan's books before taking in the film is definitely a worthwhile pursuit. As the curtain comes down with the credits, it's a safe bet that a sequel will be heading into production sometime soon. Some decent extras are available, including a three-part featurette that tracks the making of the film. Also included is a tour of one of the major settings presented in the film. Deleted scenes are also available. Look for more on Blu-ray. PG-13; 2009. 2 Stars.
